"Conecta Oncologia: Mothers' Studio Project" (Projeto Ateliê das Mães), linked to the Department of Maternal-Child Nursing at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) and conceived and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Patrícia Quintans Cundines Pacheco, proposes a paradigm shift in healthcare within hospital and community settings.
The Mother as a Subject of Care in Pediatric Oncology
In traditional pediatric oncology care, the patient's mother often sees her subjectivity erased, reduced to the status of a mere "companion" to the child undergoing treatment. The project challenges this invisibility by grounding its actions in a person-centered care model, asserting that these women are legitimate subjects of care in their own right. As they may fall ill while performing the continuous and exhausting role of caregiver, they require systematic care and treatment, as well as a welcoming environment, active listening, and comprehensive attention to their own physical, mental, and social health throughout their child's therapeutic journey.
Curricular Integration of Extension Activities and Higher Education
Aligned with national guidelines for the curricular integration of extension activities, the project serves as an interdisciplinary space combining theory and practice. Our aim is to enrich undergraduate and graduate education across the Health, Biological, Human, and Social Sciences, preparing future professionals and researchers to recognize caregiver burnout and move beyond the narrow perspective of the traditional biomedical model.
Dissemination and Academic Partnerships in Brazil
To expand this practice, we seek partnerships with undergraduate programs, graduate programs, academic leagues, and research centers across the country. Our goal is to host presentations, conferences, open lectures, and roundtables (in both in-person and remote formats), thereby strengthening the integration between the university, the healthcare system, and the community.
